Harnas:
The Harnas Wildlife Foundation, 180 miles east of the capital Windhoek, was established by the Van der Merwe family 28 years ago as a sanctuary for orphaned and injured animals and boasts Angelina Jolie as its patron.
Harnas offers visitors a unique chance to observe lions, leopards, cheetahs, alligators, warthogs, vulture, snakes, jackal, hyena, wild dog, baboon, lynxes, fox, birds, and different antelope in their natural habitat. You also get the opportunity of a “hands-on experience” in getting close enough to touch, brush, or even walk the cheetah, leopard, and lion.
Founded decades ago as a refuge for abandoned, orphaned, or injured animals, Harnas has grown into a respected sanctuary that houses lions, cheetahs, leopards, African wild dogs, baboons, antelopes, and countless other species. Each animal at Harnas has its own story, and the foundation works tirelessly to offer them safety, rehabilitation, and a chance at a better life. Visitors can witness this work firsthand through guided tours, feeding activities, and immersive wildlife encounters that highlight both the beauty and fragility of Africa’s ecosystems.
The guest farm at Harnas adds another layer of experience for travelers. Set against Namibia’s wide-open landscapes, the farm provides comfortable accommodations ranging from rustic chalets to serene camping sites. Guests wake up to the sounds of the wild, enjoy breathtaking sunsets, and participate in daily activities that bring them closer to nature. Whether it’s walking with wildlife, observing animal behavior, or volunteering with conservation teams, every moment at Harnas feels purposeful and unforgettable.
What makes Harnas truly unique is its heart. The foundation is built on compassion, community involvement, and a deep respect for all living beings. For visitors, it’s not just a destination—it’s a chance to contribute to a cause that matters. A stay at Harnas Wildlife Foundation & Guest Farm leaves travelers with lasting memories and a renewed appreciation for the vital role conservation plays in preserving Africa’s wild heritage.
