The Daan Viljoen Game Reserve:

Although comparatively small (just under 15 miles), the game park is a sanctuary to a relatively large population of game species typical of Namibia's highlands and is also very popular for bird watching, as more than 200 species have been recorded here.

The several hiking trails snaking through the hilly setting provide ample opportunities for nature lovers to explore. The game park's convenient location (only 25 km outside Windhoek) and the abundance of wildlife - kudu, springbok, gemsbok, eland, red hartebeest, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, blue wildebeest, baboon, klipspringer, steenbok and rock dassie - makes the Daan Viljoen Resort, situated in the park, the perfect stopover for visitors who would like to experience the tranquility of the bush.

A Walker's Paradise

One of the reserve's most distinct features is the absence of large predators, making it safe for visitors to explore the area on foot. Well-marked trails weave through the highland shrubland, offering opportunities for unguided, intimate encounters with nature.

Wag 'n Bietjie Trail: A shorter, 3 km route that follows a dry riverbed to the Stengel Dam.

Rooibos Trail: A more challenging 9 km circuit that crosses hills and ridges, providing panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Sweet-Thorn Trail: An extensive 34 km option for committed hikers looking for a full day's adventure.

Rich Biodiversity

Despite its proximity to the capital, the reserve teems with a variety of game species typical of the Namibian highlands. Visitors on game drives or hikes can expect to spot:

Mammals: Hartmann's mountain zebra, giraffe, kudu, oryx (gemsbok), blue wildebeest, springbok, eland, and klipspringer.

Birds: A haven for birdwatchers, with over 200 species recorded, including endemics like the Ruppell's parrot and Monteiro's hornbill.

Modern Comforts and Conservation

Operated as a public-private partnership, the reserve features the modern Daan Viljoen Lodge, offering luxury chalets and campsites. Amenities like a restaurant, bar, and pool provide comfort after a day of exploration, all while animals wander freely nearby. The lodge's development is part of ongoing conservation efforts, transforming the park into an accessible educational venue for both tourists and locals.
