Pomona/Bogenfels Tour - Full day -Guided: Minimum of 4 persons:
Bogenfels is the famous, approximatel 60 meter high Rock Arch that juts into the Atlantic Ocean south of Luderitz.
The day tour leads us into the "Sperrgebiet" (forbidden diamond area), where mining activities are still taking place, through breathtaking desert landscape with an incredible variety of deset plant. The tour includes a visit to the old "ghost" town of Pomona, where some of the mining equipment dating back to 1010 to 1030 is still reasonably well preserved.
One of the main highlights of this journey is the legendary Bogenfels Rock Arch, a 55-meter-high natural limestone arch rising where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Namib Desert. Its magnificent curve, shaped over millions of years by wind and waves, forms one of Namibia’s most photographed natural wonders. Standing beneath the arch, with waves crashing below, feels like witnessing a masterpiece of raw nature and time.
The drive continues toward the abandoned mining settlements of Pomona, once a booming diamond town in the early 1900s. Here, crumbling houses, rusted machinery, and shifting sands tell stories of harsh living conditions and feverish hunts for precious stones. The most famous site, Saddle Hill, reveals the challenges early miners faced when hauling equipment across unforgiving terrain.
Throughout the off-drive, guides share historical insights and geological facts, offering a deeper understanding of the area’s significance. Travelers also encounter desert-adapted wildlife, including oryx, ostriches, and brown hyenas, reminding visitors that even this isolated region sustains life.
The Pomona / Bogenfels 4x4 off-road is ideal for adventure enthusiasts, photographers, and history lovers seeking a rare glimpse into Namibia’s protected landscapes. It combines breathtaking terrain, forgotten history, and exclusive access, making it a truly unforgettable expedition into one of the country’s most mysterious and awe-inspiring regions.
The visit to Pomona feels like a journey into the past, when the Germans discovered the first diamonds, their harsh living and difficult working conditions.
A cold lunch is served in one of the old, but well-preserved buildings in Pomona. After lunch, the final destination is the Bogenfels - allow yourself to get carried away by one of the most spectacular sights in this rugged area.
