Hot-Air Ballooning: Sossusvlei

This has to be the best way to appreciate the scale and beauty of the Namib Desert! After an early morning start, you find yourself floating above the dunes as the sun rises over them. This is the best time of day for photos - not only is the red hue at its deepest, but the low sun gives each dune a defined edge.

Your adventure usually begins before dawn, when the desert is still cool and silent. As the balloon inflates, the surrounding landscape reveals its vast solitude—endless sand, rippling curves of dunes, and a horizon so wide it feels infinite.

Once in the air, you drift effortlessly above the world’s oldest desert, gaining a breathtaking bird’s-eye view of iconic sights like Dune 45, Big Daddy, and the shimmering salt pans of Deadvlei. The gentle movement of the balloon makes the experience feel almost spiritual, as if you’re floating through time itself.

From above, the textures and patterns of the Namib Desert become even more mesmerizing. The wind shapes the dunes into graceful waves, and as the sunlight intensifies, the red sands glow with rich color. Wildlife sightings add another layer of wonder—you may spot oryx making their way across the plains, ostriches striding between dunes, or springboks grazing in the early light. Each moment is calm, quiet, and beautifully surreal.

After an hour or so, you'll land in a peaceful hollow between the dunes and breakfast is served - with champagne and some exotic Namibian specialities such as smoked kudu (but plenty of choice for vegetarians too). Landing is part of the fun too, as the balloon gently touches down in a remote part of the desert. Many balloon safaris include a champagne breakfast served in the wilderness, where you can relive the exhilarating experience while surrounded by unspoiled nature. With delicious food, the crisp desert air, and panoramic views, it’s a perfect way to end your flight.

3 Hour balloon trips are also available in Swakopmund and Damaraland.
